Here are five things you need to know ahead of this year’s COP21 - the landmark climate conference in Paris this December:

1. Climate change is real
It is widely accepted and scientifically proven, that human activities are changing the balance of our planet. By emitting greenhouse gases, humans are causing global temperatures to rapidly increase. If emissions continue to rise, we will surpass the 2°C increase from pre-industrial levels deemed by scientists as the safe limit for our planet.

2. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time
Heat waves, droughts and floods are likely to increase as a result of climate change. The increased severity and frequency of extreme weather events will adversely affect our environment, including in the region and UAE, where increased humidity, temperatures and Gulf salinity are projected.

3. Steps are being taken to address this challenge
The international community has been working to curb climate change for more than two decades under an international treaty known as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) established in 1992.

This agreement led to the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, which set the world’s first legally binding targets for developed countries to reduce their emissions. It also provided ways to support developing countries to take climate actions.

4. United efforts are needed to seriously tackle climate change
Based on the mounting scientific evidence that climate change is happening, the UNFCCC outlined different roles to be played by developed and developing countries to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The UAE is one of the 195 Parties to the Convention which meets annually at the Conference of Parties (COP) and is playing its part to ensure continued progress in addressing climate change and in creating a new agreement at COP21. With an increasing commitment to tackle the climate crisis, the UAE is also investing domestically and internationally in renewable energy to reduce emissions.

5. Paris must pave the way for ambitious climate action by the global community beyond 2020
COP21 is considered to be the most pivotal climate negotiation in recent history. The conference will convene more than 190 nations in Paris next month to set a legally binding climate agreement applicable to all nations after 2020.

The new agreement is expected to encourage all countries to act in the best interest of humanity and the planet. Each country will commit to set actions based on its own assessment of national circumstances.
